FUNdraiser for BryaNT PARK

Before we forget the great time we had Saturday during the Derby Day event here is Throwback Thursday to This Event started years ago by the wonderful person who also started the Raft Race.  Now, it happened also to be  Cinco de Mayo, first people I saw were wearing large sombreros so was I at the right party?Quite a few things changed from what we used to experience. Formerly  A more casual level with children taking part. Also missing were our commissioners who judged the hilarity of the participants.

feeling kinda lucky!

The Prize value total was enormous $ 2.750 so the winner’s possibility endless, but not so this year it was split 5 ways. Obviously, the promotion of the wonderful gifts were not noted as in previous years.

the generous sponsors

Here i took a snapshot so you all know who provided so generously. My friend Lucky Richard Guercio was one of the big winners often seen in our local establishments. He wins a lot how do you do it.?  lol  Then there is always a 50/50 that paid out $300.  Would love to know who all the other 4 Lucky winners were.  I was table hopping and capturing the fabulous hats.  I totally agreed with the 1st place winner she was awesome.

opps wrong picture

absolutely exquisite and deservedly First Place Winner

Admired the hat the moment I saw it.  What an artist!   Jessica Teutsch’s usually has a spectacular creation, a little birdie told me she had started making it back in January. ?? The event was a class act event as I tooled around and saw so many friends and kept nursing my $7 Cranberry juice.

2013 Winner and moi

Worthy of note the complete outfit with Magnolia written + painted horse by Artist Leslie Smith

Parisian Chic, not able to compete as she was on the committee. selling 50/50 tickets

would not draw any attention in  Little Havana. Won the loudest shirt. hahaha

The actual race, 2 min. 4 seconds winner Justify and has a chance to be a Triple Crown winner as was Secretariat who made this race in 2 min. 24 sec.  (I was in the infield that year, won $270 ) now American Pharoah’s  timing 2 min and 26 sec.   Not a spot of mud thrown on Justify or jockey this was a clean race on a muddy track ck those times again.  Now back to the party which i always said was one of the top Fundraiser in our town.  Seen working hard was Tabitha, Jon Faust the consummate Lake Worth mc, The awards were unisex (so sad)

definitely had the Audrey Hepburn feel

two more local artists

If you’re looking for more great photos  Judge Sami Makela has some, always Tom Johnson, and of course Leonard Bryant never disappoints. Darin Engle also was seen taking photos.   If you didn’t see your friends here they made it to the other Derby Party which had 250 plus guests and some even attended from KY.   Anyone want to share photos from there just send them to moi.  My camera battery was exhausted.

ARTful evening in Lake Worth

As your out and about this evening make the Cultural Council one of your stops. They have multiple exhibitions worth your time.  The annual showcase of interiors matched with art, however, no catalogue you’re on your own.  the first on the left is so busy you can’t wrap your head around it and what appears Edward Hopper paintings but not. As you go further into the interior, you can calm down and enjoy the serenity of less is more. This is in the main gallery.  Now for the piece de resistance two different exhibitions with far to little mention.

from a private collection

As you enter go to the right and along that wall is a wonderful small collection of Florida Art.  On loan from the private collection of Phil Materio who’s collection could have taken up the main salon, he has upwards 500 works carefully chosen.

Clarence I Dreisbach 1903-2001

He continues collecting as only a few months ago I witnessed the purchase of a highly collectible Lake Worth Artist. The above painting not described,  could well have depicted a scene on Worth Avenue. Dreisbach originally from Pa. was a member of several South Florida art guilds.

JPMorgan Foundation space at PBCC

The other exhibition in the sponsored JPMorgan Chase Foundation space is Annette Rawlings.  Now a Lake Worth Artist whose work has taken on bolder colours.  A modern take on her formal beginnings of using rabbit skin glue and oils, she now is using acrylics gouache and ceramic media.  She is still true to her minimalistic art form. You can see from this photo what the middle image is. On the postcard, the colors were off and out of context, I thought it was an Ice Cream Cone.  Have for many years admired Annette’s work and she is also an author, plus has a line of jewelry.  She has exhibited from Woodstock, all the way to the  City of Lights. There is something to please just about everyone in this months show at the Cultural Council.  Well worth the trip and always support your local artist.  Purchase something.

Lake Worth Street Painting 2018

Good Morning …..how fabulous to be back in Lake Worth

Chris Gostling
Monday Blogger

and what a beautiful morning it is, perfect for the start to the week, blue skies and sunshine. And this same weather prevailed over the weekend making the 24th Lake Worth Street Painting Festival a huge success. I love it if I am here for the festival because I think it is by far the most exciting event of the year.

The taste of Lake Worth on Friday evening heralded the start of the festivities with wristbands on sale which entitled you to visit something like 20 different eateries and bars and sample food and drinks at each one. Many people took part, walking from one venue to the next laughing and talking with others about the food. There was music everywhere and the sound of equipment being moved into place here and there along the two roads closed for the weekend. Children made the most of the closed roads and rode scooters and bikes up and down and chased each other and played games, parents safe in the knowledge that no cars would be coming. Some of the artists had already set up and had their work outlined ready to go early on Saturday morning. All the roads were marked in spaces evenly set out, ready for their artist to claim as their working area when the sun rose.

I worked the shuttle buses that drove backwards and forwards to the college outside town where people could leave their cars and travel in on the bus free of charge. The job of all the ambassadors on the buses was to welcome the people to the event, give the background to the Festival, encourage visitors to make the most of the restaurants and other facilities and promote the two charities to which any donations would be given, namely The Carers of people with ALS and Wheels for Children, a scheme to provide children with much needed wheelchairs. On my bus we made $42 dollars for the cause, not bad I thought!!!

The visitors were lovely, very friendly and made from all age groups, all with the same intention of having fun. There were large groups, couples, people on their own, some had visited before, others had never even been to Lake Worth. What I enjoyed were those who rode the bus in and then got on the same bus when returning to the college, they talked with excitement about their experience, discussing which piece they thought was the best, where they had eaten, the one common theme was how much they had all enjoyed the town and the experience of the Festival.

There were artists of all nationalities, both adults and children, artists who had taken part many times, some for the first time, school groups working together each knowing exactly where to make a mark, which colour to use and working in harmony to create fabulous shapes and images, all covered with chalk, some with as much on themselves as on the ground. Some were local, some had traveled from the other side of the country, some worked alone, other in pairs or larger groups……all with the intention of creating something to amaze the audience.

Sunday, of course, saw the artists finishing their work and packing up, leaving these wonderful artworks to be driven over and obliterated when the roads were reopened at 9pm, leaving the faintest marks to show that the Festival had taken place and was not just the figment of the imagination.

I have never been able to bring myself to drive down Lake or Lucerne until all traces have gone!!!

Enjoy the week, see you next Monday!                                                                                    Editors note:  Chris Gostling hails from England and has been a contributor on Mondays prior to her moving back to England’s Southend on Sea, Lake Worth’s sister city.  Photos  by Chris Gostling                             Photos below by Susan Ona

e -mail versus snail-mail mail-art

Today  Jan. 22, 2018  Your postage has gone up and it’s  now .50 cents. Guess you’ll be purchasing a sheet of penny stamps or 4 cent stamps.  Patty our lovely mail person in our 33460 Post Office alerted me last Friday.  I truly meant to share this  info so you could get your valentine cards out early and on the cheap.    We all have a passion for something or another and mine is calligraphy and mail art. Perhaps you want to participate in this.  Snail-mail, better described as mail art.  There is a mail art call  right here in Lake Worth.  The Last one was for our Lake Worth Centennial and we got mail from all over the world, we got mail from France from China

and some from down in Delray, Boca, Ocean Breeze. That collection is housed in our Historical Museum.  All that sent in can say “I have my work in a museum” lol. the current call was sent out 4 months ago and some mail has already arrived.  Where to send your decorated envelopes and what exactly is this?  On the bottom of this, I list two other calls that you might just enjoy.  Usually if you send one to a mail artist (me)  you get one in return. .   Far better than an e mail, that you delete.  Here is something you can hold, keep, reread, enjoy and show off.   You may be sitting at your desk right now and doodling, don’t let those doodles go to waste on the envelope, address it, put the correct postage on it, voila!.   SEND TO:                                            ART PROJECT           theme  BOOKS N quotes                                                                           P.O. BOX    46                                                                                                                                            Lake Worth Fl. 33460                                                            Dead line    March 15, 2018                                              Your mail art will be posted on the internet and showcased there.  If you put your return add on you might get one back. put your e mail lower right corner on back so I can let you know it has arrived. There is always a possibility that it gets exhibited.  Now if you want to get more personal you can actually special order a sheet of stamps with one of your favorites photos. thats a link.              Bellow from my collection Top left was created for this blog with business cards as I was also known for painting  flip flops.  The bottom left is a cinderella stamp.

top Left was created for this blog and business card. bottom r is a cinderella stamp

My collection of stamps above plus many more I will have to purchase stamps to make up the new rate of .50 cents.   Don’t do christmas cards and am way late on my New Years card but rest assured they are on the way and no you won’t have to pay the extra postage.

other call for mail art.

BIG Announcement

 IMG_1223.JPG

Last night McMow Art Glass held its annual holiday party with the Thursday Night Peddlers caroling the over flow crowd.  Check out Maryellen’s live feed.  It was a well attended, you had to be there to hear a major announcement.  It is major!  IMG_1232New products were demonstrated and for the entire day there were specials and discounts on  glass art supplies and upcoming classes.  If your quick you might still find a Groupon on the internet. IMG_1215.JPG  As most of us are aware there have been rumors about them moving,  selling the building, and yet just rumors.  Taylor, Phil and Shanon’s daughter, had center stage as she made the big announcement. Drum roll please……Introducing the McMow Art Glass Institute their 501.c3.  IMG_1227.JPGSpearheaded by Taylor and a select strong board of directors, all were introduced at last night’s event.  Taylor comes with experience having worked with the non-profit sector in the Washington DC area in low-income housing and a full understanding of how this can change many lives and communities.   They will be reaching about 300 individuals per year including children attending title One/low-income schools, Veterans coping with PTSD, individuals in recovery programs, and individuals diagnosed with autism.

They,  McMow have been searching for a long time for a new space, parking always an issue and so they are making this bold move.  Now or never.  Particularly as they had hosted this Pop-Up Shops, and the Glass Quest Conference in West Palm Beach this past summer and very successful.  A good indicator that the  central Palm Beach county area is ready for this next stage of expansion.  They have secured several locations and partnered to have off site classes.IMG_1219.JPGany one can make these charming glass gifts.

Support your local artists is always my motto,  especially with such a strong tie to our community.  41 years in Lake Worth . They are located at 701 n Dixie Hwy  and you can reach them  561-585-9011 or visit www.mcmow.com
