Beach outing promised perfect weather

On arrival at 10:00 a.m. the beach had umbrellas up chairs waiting for guests, it was a lovely sight. With two charges in tow in the water before we settled close to the life guard stands.

Hello from Colombia

Greetings from ENGLAND still in LOCKDOWN. 6-29-20Then it’s throwback Thursday once again and this time we’re so close

Featured

…and a beautiful England at that, glorious weather, glorious surroundings, glorious happenings….well, a lot of it is glorious, even more so if we could, get of this virus which is causing mayhem everywhere in the world. but as I said last week, I’m trying not to mention the V word , so here it goes….. This week has been full of busyness, lots to do and lots to complete in a short time. It started with the community hub that I run, it’s a beautiful old church as you know and I am so passionate about community, I cannot wait to get started again with groups and courses and projects going on. To this end we have started to make it look fabulous, from the garden makeover I told you about a couple of weeks ago to the building itself. It has been used by stitchers and groups making scrubs and all manner of things to keep our nurses and doctors safe and now that has slowed down, we can move on.

The next project is making masks as the wearing of them will be mandatory as from July 4th you recognize that date of course!!! We have lots of stitchers busy on their sewing machines to make the masks from material that has been donated and left over from the scrub making. We are organizing a mask give away day on July 6th where we will unveil our mask tree which will be hung with masks for people . If they want to make a donation, they can and it all helps to keep the costs down, small donations add up to a big donation in the end. I am looking forward to that as it will get people in and it means lots of members of our community will feel safer when the new guidelines come into play, easing the lockdown.

Whilst we were discussing the tree project I happen to be talking about the wonderful peace poles that were created across America for World Peace Day. There are some in Lake Worth which of course, are beautiful Everyone thought the idea sounded great and so that will be another project!!! I love that we can now meet up with friends as long as we socially distance……and last Thursday we did just that, this time in a friend’s in -on-sea, a lovely fishing village and town, 10 miles down the coast from where I live. We decided to have Turkish food and we stopped of off the restaurant to pick up the food on our way, it was utterly delicious and just like old times, chatting and laughing and drinking the odd glass of wine. It is very noticeable that people are getting together, at the beginning of this endemic, it was eerily quiet, as people stayed home , only to venture out to get food or exercise, now we hear the sound of laughter and voices again. I love it! I also love that we can hear the children playing in the local primary school as they play outside at break times, a lovely sound. The beaches are still busy, particularly on weekends we tend to stay away when they are busy and go for a walk along the beach later in the evening when the crowds have thinned out. People are better now and social distancing is much in evidence. Paddle boarding has really taken of here as a new sport and the paddle boarders are out in force especially on weekends, it’s nice to see. The big news is that from the 4th we only have to stay 1 meter apart than 2 , I think it will be ok, it will certainly help the economy hugely as restaurants and pubs can reopen, in a new way of course. It will be very different as there will be new ways ordering and paying for drinks and food…….lots of eating and drinks al fresco to make it easier to keep distancing. Airlines are advertising flights and there are several countries we can travel to without having to quarantine 14 days upon our return, I think I will give it a miss for now. You appear to have a lot more freedom to travel as we do, has it changed at all? I heard about your new rule re wearing masks, a wise move if numbers are rising again. I have just finished the thought of the day board for tomorrow and it is day 98, only two more days till day 100, I think I will stop here. Please take care, have fun and stay happy ……..speak to you next week.

FUNdraiser for BryaNT PARK

Before we forget the great time we had Saturday during the Derby Day event here is Throwback Thursday to This Event started years ago by the wonderful person who also started the Raft Race.  Now, it happened also to be  Cinco de Mayo, first people I saw were wearing large sombreros so was I at the right party?Quite a few things changed from what we used to experience. Formerly  A more casual level with children taking part. Also missing were our commissioners who judged the hilarity of the participants.

feeling kinda lucky!

The Prize value total was enormous $ 2.750 so the winner’s possibility endless, but not so this year it was split 5 ways. Obviously, the promotion of the wonderful gifts were not noted as in previous years.

the generous sponsors

Here i took a snapshot so you all know who provided so generously. My friend Lucky Richard Guercio was one of the big winners often seen in our local establishments. He wins a lot how do you do it.?  lol  Then there is always a 50/50 that paid out $300.  Would love to know who all the other 4 Lucky winners were.  I was table hopping and capturing the fabulous hats.  I totally agreed with the 1st place winner she was awesome.

opps wrong picture

absolutely exquisite and deservedly First Place Winner

Admired the hat the moment I saw it.  What an artist!   Jessica Teutsch’s usually has a spectacular creation, a little birdie told me she had started making it back in January. ?? The event was a class act event as I tooled around and saw so many friends and kept nursing my $7 Cranberry juice.

The actual race, 2 min. 4 seconds winner Justify and has a chance to be a Triple Crown winner as was Secretariat who made this race in 2 min. 24 sec.  (I was in the infield that year, won $270 ) now American Pharoah’s  timing 2 min and 26 sec.   Not a spot of mud thrown on Justify or jockey this was a clean race on a muddy track ck those times again.  Now back to the party which i always said was one of the top Fundraiser in our town.  Seen working hard was Tabitha, Jon Faust the consummate Lake Worth mc, The awards were unisex (so sad)

definitely had the Audrey Hepburn feel

two more local artists

If you’re looking for more great photos  Judge Sami Makela has some, always Tom Johnson, and of course Leonard Bryant never disappoints. Darin Engle also was seen taking photos.   If you didn’t see your friends here they made it to the other Derby Party which had 250 plus guests and some even attended from KY.   Anyone want to share photos from there just send them to moi.  My camera battery was exhausted.

Now about the Royal Wedding,  keep those beautiful hats handy and stroll Lake Worth in honor of the nuptials on May 19, as we will have our 2nd American Princess.  I’ll be sporting a Fascinator.

Just a Sat. in Lake Worth

Three (3) Cultural offerings on one day and the car never left the driveway that is what Lake Worth Fl. can offer. That is not counting the morning at the beach before it got too hot.  The Lake Worth Historical Museum was open on Sat. from 1 – 4 p.m.  They have a wonderful marketing message created by Walter Harper that speaks to how young 100-year town is. So most of what is in the collection are relatable to a not so distant past.

The next stop was at the Cultural Council which just opened a new exhibit by YES local artist Deborah Yates another one of our gems.  Who has found herself in our burgeoning artist-friendly town, following the steps of  several other artists from Key West and Coconut Grove/Miami.  It is one stunning exhibit in the small gallery space sponsored by Chase Bank.  I have to admit I was taken with this work. It is abstract, not my personal taste, however, I recognize it’s power as you turn the corner and are confronted with OMG this is good. Deborah also does environmental art on a large scale.  Definitely, go see.

Debra Yates left with friend Susan Guyoux at the opening reception

Then a stop for good Mexican food at Lupitas.  It was packed with people just returning from the beach Laplaya, with a party in full swing in the private room.

never had seen this room. looks like fun

Last wonderful experience of the day was Oliver at the Lake Worth Playhouse downtown Lake Worth.  It was well-produced everyone was on cue and the casting was flawless. (Call  for Flashdance is now open) The music memorable and the performances on track there was just one person who appeared to be out of sync at the very end and that was an adult.  The young theatre troupe was flawless. What wonderful future thespians talent we have here in our area.  Soon they can be inducted into the International Thespian Society  wish you all well.    Thank You Tabitha for the ticket.

Mockingbird Earth Day

A charming gesture for a well-done performance (last photo in blog the reveal)

Earth Day Celebration at Mockingbird Gardens was a wonderful event yesterday.  So here are some of the photos of its participants.  For me the musical performances were the joy,  but before anything got started Mother Earth had two subliminal messages.  Not to be ignored.  Like, welcome to Florida and sugar sand, also a good sign was the Charette. If you have google click on their daily logo image and listen to Jane Goodall.

Earth Day recognition had been read at City Hall and here repeated for all in attendance by our Commissioners
Scott Maxwell and Herman Robinson

Enjoy the photos with minimum commentary.  This event was sponsored by Kiwanis with lots of participants known in our community.

The event was perfectly orchestrated with the help of Mother Nature

Just about everything showcased was handcrafted, recycled and earth-friendly organizations were there to raise our consciousness. The event was from noon to 5 one of the highlights this year was a  Adopt a Tree, which came with a certificate.  Neighbors and friends were visible and if you recognize them you realize they care about being earth-friendly in how they deport themselves.  Recycling, picking up trash when not asked or organized.

Arts Loft Artist with his creations (in the buy and sell section)

On hand were artists who actually make their own creations with their own hands.    Speaking of artists these performers were outstanding true artists nurtured in our community.

Volunteer recognition

This morning was a special day for many Lake Worthians.  They gathered in the Casino Ballroom which was brightly decorated for them, leaving the chill outside.  The City of Lake Worth recognized the efforts of the many volunteers, with this volunteer appreciation breakfast.  April is the month for the usual recognition, however, we have in our midst snowbirds who also share a vested interest in the well-being of our community.

oh, baby, it’s cold outside

The value of these Lake Worthians and they are worthy is important for a  small community as ours.  Giving hundreds of hours of their busy time, they make that time as each realizes their input is important and today were recognized in such a lovely way with this breakfast.   During the State of the City Address by our Honorable Mayor Pam, she had put a dollar value on their contribution and it was enormous.   Today once more to a full room of volunteers she again gave her heartfelt thanks to everyone present. It was a lovely program with the presentation of the Colors by the ROTC Honor Guard,  Vice Mayor Pro Tem Andy Amoroso, Commissioner Herman, Maxwell were in attendance. (Omari was mentioned, however, was not able to attend as he did last year.) The executive assistant Silvina Donaldson, called out all the boards and departments individually.   These volunteers are experts in their respected fields, such as attorneys, financiers. artists. grant writers,  tourism,  administrators, giving from the heart to a community they embraced when they made quirky Lake Worth their home.

the 3 women sharing the podium have power are creative and resourceful

Midnight Sun Event

Checked out the Wife Carrying Contest.  Next year will spend all 3 days in and out with the wristband as the food was that good, not the usual fair food.  A beautiful day at Bryant Park this past Sunday. The giant Crocodile eating our bridge priceless.  Saw folks from Parrot Cove, College Park and of course Bryant Park.  Was impressed with the cleanliness and all the blue and white.  The Kids area was great with different kinds of activities that I had not seen before.  They most likely gave their parents an early night, after the full days’ activities.   Trying to give a blow by blow of the race in chronological order of the obstacles in the race.  From the start to the finish, the obstructions, and not obvious how far they actually had to run.  All the way past the painted containers to the sea wall.

photo      Tom Johnson

The entertainers were top drawer Hanna Pakarinen won Finland’s top performer and Mary of Rudy’s pub was their official host.  As I was watching and listening to Hanna she so reminded me of Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac.  The performances were in English and Finnish.  At 12:45 the crowd gathered around the stanchions ready for the “wive carrying contest”*.

the sprinter #101  on left

6x world champ Taisto Miettinen                                                                          photo Tom Johnson

Got there early, positioned myself opposite the water obstacle, only to see it was not the vantage point for me.  Ultimately the winner was #101 Attorney Taisto Miettinen of Finland who prior to the start was seen sprinting the course twice before he saddled himself with a wife.  Note if you want to see really good photos and up close I recommend you check into Tom Johnson FB page.  Reporting the race chronologically here.  Not satisfied with the water obstacle view,

obvious  here who has the best view

I spotted the kids across and how high they were.  So that was my next view point.  Imagine Sophias (that’s her name)  surprise as I crawled into the children’s jump house.

documented by Tom Johnson, thanks

from my perch                                                                                      the Wellington competitor

There was local competition, the Lake Worth competitor was paired with one from Wellington.   It was a great crowd that looked on and cheered on their favorites. The next obstacle took place where the crowd was less dense.

The hurdle

The hurdle was the halfway point, from there still a way to go to the sea wall.

view to the end of the race course, the seawall

the victory lap, with (the rent a wife?) have no clue

Next year it will be more competitive as at the end, out of nowhere appeared two women carrying their wives.  Leave it to quirky Lake Worth to add to the already exciting event.

Hello Parrot Cove

this is what kept the kids occupied

Johan Joe is up in West Palm Beach and I can recommend it for the ambiance as well as the wonderful food.

Where did that week go? I cannot believe that it is Monday again and a week since The Street Painting Festival. It is a beautiful morning here in Lake Worth,  as usual, one of those blue skies with wispy clouds, a welcome breeze keeping the heat at bay, fabulous!

Not so in England which has, like much of Europe, been hit with what has been called ‘The Beast from the East’, heavy snow storms with freezing temperatures. We never get snowstorms where I live just East of London, maybe a flurry or two, but nothing like a foot of snow with lots of ice. The problem when you are not expecting it or are not used to it is that you are not ready, the right equipment is not available, roads get clogged, trains cease to run on frozen lines and utilities start to fail and it has been chaos. Of course, there is always a bright side to everything, school’s closed, parents could not get to work and with lots of slopes filed with white fresh snow there is nothing to do but take a tray, a sledge, trash bags anything that will slide and do just that, slide from top to bottom…..on your front, your back, any way! If you have skis, dig them out and ski! Then there is always the snowball fight and the snowman building competition – whatever it was, fun was had by all! One of our smaller schools hit the news because the staff had a snowball fight with the students, what memories those children will have of school, they dared to throw the health and safety rule book out of the window and let the children be children for once. And, of course, I have missed it all!!!! Just to demonstrate the difference a day makes, it appears to be sunshine all the way today with snow rapidly disappearing and normal life resuming. It seems that the weather is unpredictable almost everywhere with extremes, from droughts to floods to heatwaves to snow, crazy!!!

don’t ask, it was funny

This week has been perfect, catching up with friends is always fun, with parties and breakfast and dinner dates where we sit chattering non stop about everything and everyone for hours at a time.

I did something I have been wanting to do for ages, and that is go to The Stonzek Picture House, ‘Loving Vincent was on, a film I wanted to see but missed first time around so now was my chance. First of all, Sacha sells the tickets,

Sasha

if you want popcorn or candy or coffee, he also does that and just before starting the film he welcomes everyone and gives a short talk on the film showing as well as reminding everyone where the restrooms are, films coming shortly and a gentle reminder about switching off phones. Then he starts the projector which can be unpredictable and has to be stopped three times to get it right. It was an amazing experience, the film was incredible and everyone applauded at the end. I loved that people get up to go to the bathroom throughout the film and had to walk in front of the screen to get there.

I tried the new bookshop, new restaurant Lilo’s, breakfast at Toojays with it’s revamped signs, the beach, evening on the avenue amongst other things and now feel very much at home. The sun cream machines down at the beach are a great addition if you leave your sunscreen at home…..no more sunburn!

Last Friday in the Plaza a young woman was rocking it, a total one-woman band who had everyone tapping their feet, dancing and clapping their hands, amazing! I love the bands that entertain down there…

rededication at the south 5th st. Greenway this past Tuesday

I am having fun spotting the Little Free Libraries which are dotted around town and have already borrowed and read, two books. It is a great project and I hear that the founder of the LFL’s, Tod Bol, is coming to the town soon, he will be impressed with the number of LFL’s that there are and that few of them ever get vandalised. Mary Lindsey inspired me when the LFL project started and I got to paint a library, it has grown and grown and is making a difference to literacy levels among the children along with the reading schemes and library programmes. I have set up the same scheme in my hometown of Southend on sea but it has not reached the success it has here but maybe one day, you never know. Mary is always happy to help when I get stuck…..

The elections are coming up soon and that is always an exciting time, I am glad we will be here to share the anticipation and excitement and then the celebrations. The work that goes on behind the scenes for an election is incredible, from volunteers posting flyers in mailboxes to organisation of talks, of get togethers, of paperwork, it all goes to informing people of what they are voting for and why they should vote. I am sure the campaigns have been successful and people will come out in huge numbers to vote for the right people to run this beautiful city.

I love the mural on the swimming pool wall down at the beach and I am loving all the new artwork that has appeared all over town – my favourite

continues line all through the Street Painting Festival weekend for this photo op.

being the wings on the side of the shoe repair shop. I like them because I have seen everyone having lots of fun taking photos, I particularly like the wings for children with the tiny footprints to stand in the get exactly the right shot….a great idea!

This week looks as if it is going to be more excitement and fun, the weather is set to be gorgeous, a couple of rain showers but that means we also get rainbows. I hope the coming week is fabulous for you……
